Health Apps for Learning Evaluation

Listed below are handy apps that students can use in their everyday lives to actively better their health!

Stoic is a mental health and wellness app that allows users to track their moods and progress over time, learn how to practice common mental health activities such as breathing exercises, meditation, and everyday journaling.

Relevance: Focuses on one of many aspects of health - mental health. It allows students to be more aware of their mental health patterns, and how to acknowledge their feelings, how to lessen anxiety, and track their progress.

Customization: Stoic caters to the student's mental health needs. No student's mental health suggestions will be exactly the same and is entirely dependent on their current status.

Score: 4

Feedback: There are limited feedback mechanisms that the app can suggest for the student, depending on their mood. The app will give the user specific instructions when given a suggestion on how to improve mental health.

Score: 3

Thinking Skills: Forces students to get in touch with their emotions, which are often overlooked in a busy student's life. The tracking feature reminds students to pause and acknowledge their feelings for the day.

Usability: The app is pretty straight-forward and can be accessed on any mobile app store. It can even be used with an Apple Watch as a widget.

Engagement: At first, it may be difficult for a student to get into the routine of logging their mood and feelings. Especially if a student is having a bad day, they might not feel motivated to log onto the app and record their feelings.

Sharing: There is no "social" feature that allows users to share their mood logs or progress charts. However, this can be shared with a screenshot on the student's device.

Yuka - Food & Cosmetic scanner (click here to download)

Yuka is a barcode scanner app that allows users to instantly scan items for nutritional content, additives, harmful chemicals, and the benefits of the item. Allows users to practice healthful consumption by increasing awareness in the foods and personal products they purchase. 

 

 


Relevance
: With nutrition being an important aspect of health, it's important for students to practice healthy nutrition habits such as checking the products they purchase. Yuka can help students learn what products are beneficial or harmful for them, as well as healthier alternatives.

Score: 4

Customization: The only customization aspect of Yuka is its ability to recommend similar, healthier products comparable to products the user has previously scanned. Other than that, the app does not offer much customization.

Score: 2

Feedback: When a product is scanned, a plethora of feedback categorizes are able to be viewed, depending on the product. This may include nutritional feedback such as  sugar, additive, caloric, or sodium content. For non-food items, the app will provide feedback about specific chemicals the product contains. The app will give the product an overall rating, giving the user a general idea of how healthful the product is for them.

Thinking Skills: Since the app immediately gives the product a health score, the student does not have to analyze every single ingredient in the product. Instead, the app allows students to evaluate the product's pros and cons, and if they should ultimately buy the product.

Usability: The app can be downloaded on any mobile device and used without teacher's consent.

Engagement: At first, students may not care much about how "healthy" a product is. However, as they continue to learn curriculum about healthful behaviors, it is important for them to actively practice healthy habits in their personal lives. Yuka is a great tool that isn't intimidating for users, and allows users to learn about a multitude of products overtime, which they may find intriguing over time.

Sharing: There are no in-app sharing capabilities. However, product information can be easily screenshot and shared with others (as seen in the example pictures above).
